Armed with a stove and station wagon, coupled with passion and knowledge of cooking Southern Soul Food and Caribbean cuisine, Bennett Caterers was born. Catering to a very diverse population in greater Hartford in 1963, Eva Mae Bennett was very resourceful with her Home Economics background. Limited opportunities in the segregated south forced Eva Mae to work as a domestic. The Jewish families that employed her taught her the art and traditions in the preparation and cooking of kosher meals. Kenneth Bennett, who was no stranger to hard work, soon became employee number two at Bennett Caterers. He had been working in the fields of Jamaica. His cooking skills and knowledge of Jamaican and other Caribbean fair expanded their client base as well as the menu.
The breakthrough year, 1973, was the year it all changed. All 9 of their children were employed in the family's thriving business. The endless strive for perfection at all catering events had begun. By 1983, Bennett Caterers had cemented one of the best catering reputations in the greater Hartford area; in the same year, Joanne graduated from Howard University. Following graduation from Howard and began working at an insurance company, but Joanne’s personal fulfillment eluded her. Having that burning desire of cooking in her heart, Joanne resigned and Bennett Caterers of Washington D.C. was formed. Bennett Caterers has served the D.C Metro area for more than twenty five years. Working with Chefs from five different continents and seven countries. Many in the nation's capital rank Bennett Caterers as one of the best International caterers in the DC Metro Area.
